Up to 80 people verbally abused police called to a brawl outside a pub in the inner-city suburb of Balmain overnight.
The brawl had ended by the time police arrived at the West End Hotel on Mullens St, but the group became verbally abusive toward police and quickly grew to between 70 and 80 people, police said.
Officers had been called to the pub at 6.15pm (AEDT) yesterday after a fight involving about 20 people broke out during a wake for a local man.
Extra police were sent to the pub and broke up the dispute.
Eight people were arrested, six were charged and two released pending further inquiries while police dispersed the crowd.
Four men and two women aged between 17 and 21 were charged with a range of offences including offensive language, assault and affray.
A police spokesman said that more than 30 officers from nearby stations rushed to the pub to assist their colleagues where patrons involved in the brawl had spilled onto the road.
No officers or people attending the wake were injured during the brawl or subsequent confrontation with police, the spokesman said.
A 17-year-old youth involved in the incident and charged with assault police, violent disorder, resist arrest and offensive behaviour was refused bail and will face Bidura Children's Court today.
