The reading club aims to help students aged from 4-12 yrs old to improve their reading level and skills. Students will be doing guided-reading with teachers and learning about letter sounds, vocabulary, grammar and phonics by reading assigned books. Reading with us is different with reading at home. Students could develop a range of skills, focusing on both the meaning of sentences and shape of a story, and on individual words and phonics. With teachers, students will discuss about the stories, share ideas, recognise common sight words and grammar concepts.
We use a range of methods to teach children to read. The main one currently used is called ‘synthetic phonics’. For example, students are taught that they letter ‘s’ makes a sss sound, as in sun; ‘a’ as in apple and ‘t’ as in tap. Students then can start to read simple words by blending the sounds together to make a word, e.g s-a-t. After, they will learn the more straightforward letter-sound relationships and more complex ones.
