哈里太太也非常喜欢宠物，她养了一只宠物猫，而这只宠物猫似乎与小钟家的小金毛看对了眼，并没有出现猫狗大战的情景，反而第一次见面就相处得极为和谐融洽。因为这个共同的爱好，只要小钟夫妇休息在家，哈里太太就会经常带着她的爱猫过来串门，互相交流养宠物的经验。

一天，哈里太太在小钟家正和女主人交谈，小金毛突然速度极快地从一个角落跑出来，表情显得极为兴奋。哈里太太瞧着觉得好玩，便拿出手机给它拍照，边拍边说这狗今天好激动呀，有什么好事儿呀。但是接下来，小金毛便叼着双女主人的拖鞋直冲院子跑去，使劲地撕咬起来，还配合着爪子用力猛拉扯。小钟见状，上前大声喝止起来，但小金毛像是没听到一般，依旧我行我素。于是小钟上前对着金毛的屁股踢了一脚，狗还是不松口，他又用劲地踢了它一脚，狗这才丢下拖鞋跑走。

就是这一幕看似很平常的举动，却不想引起了哈里太太的极度不满，她当即便对小钟大声叫喊阻止，同时用手机拍下了他踢狗的镜头，嘴上惊呼：“天啊，你怎么可以这样对待它！这是违法的！”她认为，小狗反常地咬鞋，是因为它正处于换牙期，牙根发痒，属正常现象，宠物的主人应该给予充分的理解，而不是如此暴力地对待它。

当时小钟夫妇也只是讪讪地一笑而过，也没把哈里太太当时的反应放在心上。没想到，祸根已经埋下。几天后，法院来人送来传票，有人将小钟告上了法庭，而这个原告人就是哈里太太。

原来哈里太太是动物保护协会成员，她岂能容忍有人如此粗暴地对待宠物？澳大利亚的法律明确规定，虐待宠物、伤害宠物，要判两年半监禁。最后，在哈里太太的“求情”之下，小钟被判坐牢两年。

在有些方面，外国人真的是认理不认人，小钟的这件事的确让我们感觉有点不可思议。也许这也是中西文化的一种差异，澳洲社会对动物的保护与对人的保护非常相近。
