The British Columbia government has announced $14.5 million to help skilled immigrants get into the jobs they were trained to do.
In a bid to alleviate the problems immigrants face in transferring their credentials and skills to the Canadian workplace and to help meet growing labour shortages, the government is introducing the B.C. Skills Connect for Immigrants program. It will include assessment and planning, language and skills enhancement, upgrading and mentorships.
In a news release, Premier Gordon Campbell pointed out that there are skilled immigrants working in jobs unrelated to their training, a circumstance he described as, "a waste of human potential," and "a waste for British Columbia because we can use their talents.
"If immigrants moved to B.C. to work in a field where there is a shortage -- whether it's in engineering or construction trades or nursing or pharmacy -- then we should speed up the process of getting their training and credentials recognized in B.C," he said.
