Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Advertising is the most important cause of unhealthy eating habits.
Advertising, with the soaring evolution of modern mass media, as we know, is completely pervasive in our lives. Some people argue that advertising is the most important cause of unhealthy eating habits, for it has made people passive to accept what they eat ,where they eat and even how they eat. Others, nevertheless, demonstrate that advertising provide various information with us to choose the food, which has a good influence on both our fitness and eating habits. From my perspective, I give my vote to the latter opinion.
To start with, advertising is definitely a convenient approach for us to have a good knowledge of food. With advertising on TV, we can just sit on the couch in our house to acquire the news of delicious food and good-service restaurant, rather than gathering all these information calling our friends or searching on the internet. For my part, I can enjoy a new kind of ice cream as soon as I watch the advertiment, and also share the information with my friends as soon as possible. As a result, life is made easier and more comfortable with advertising.
Additionally, when it comes to the eating habits, advertising contributes more to our cultivating good habits of eating rather than bad ones. It is not difficult to for us to find that a large amount of businessmen, in an attempt to win a higher profit, makes the advertising of their products positive and healthy, catering the prevailing mental needs of people. For instance, an ad for bread: there are a brother and sister eager to eat the nutritious bread, but they are warned by the mother that they have to wash their hands before eating. Therefore, a win-win situation is constructed by this advertisement, which gives publicity to the bread for the merchants, and reminds children of the necessary of eating after washing their hands at the same time. In other words, this piece of ad benefits both merchants and consumers to some extent.
Yet, negative impacts of advertising exerted on our lives can never be ignored. In modern society, with the unprecedented development of science and technology, most of us have said goodbye to the era in which we are short of food and have to struggle against not enough meals. However, what is the trouble, obesity has turned into a new problem for human beings, which, according to some experts, is a consequence of people’s living pressure and inundant food information from mass medias. No matter when people are turning on the TV, they can always find the advertising of food, the content of most advertisements. Therefore, it will be better for people’s fitness if advertisements are more concerning the sports, entertainment, or body exercises.
In conclusion, advertising is beneficial to us and our eating habits despite of some negative effects. It would be reasonable to believe that we are certain to benefit much from the advertisements on condition that we make good utilization of them.
