Post-Graduation Work Permit

International students who have completed their program of study at a post-secondary institution in LACE w:st="on">CanadaLACE> may participate in the post-graduation work program which is designed to provide students with work experience in their field of study. Students can be eligible for a one-year Work Permit or a two-year Work Permit (if they meet the criteria - see details below).
You must apply for a post-graduation Work Permit within 90 days of being notified that you have completed the requirements of your program of study (e.g., within 90 days of release of your final grades). Your Study Permit must be valid during the 90 day period. If your Study Permit expires before the end of this period, an extension will be granted. You must apply for the extension (see Extending Your Study Permit section for details).
To apply for a post-graduation Work Permit you will need a number of documents including:
  • a Job Offer Letter from employer outlining the nature of the job, duties, salary, and duration of employment (Note: the employment must be consistent with your recently completed program of study)
  • evidence of notification by your academic institution that you have completed the requirements of your program of study (e.g., final transcript, status letter from the university)
  • other documents as listed in the Document Checklist (see below) To be eligible for a post-graduation Work Permit of up to two years, in addition to the above requirements, you must also have:
  • Studied at and graduated from an institution located outside of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM), the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) or the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD). For detailed information on location, visit http//www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-locations.html
  • obtained employment outside of the CMM (Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal), GTA (Greater Toronto Area) , or GVRD (Greater Vancouver Regional District)(Note: Students participating in a Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program funded by Foreign Affairs Canada or a Government of Canada Awards Program funded by Foreign Affairs Canada, or receiving funding from the Canadian International Development Agency are not eligible for the two-year work permit).
Students who currently have a one-year post-graduation Work Permit and who meet the criteria for a two-year work permit can apply for a one-year extension of their work permit.
Graduating students may take advantage of the post-graduation work program only once regardless of the number of degrees completed in Canada.
The post-graduation Work Permit cannot be extended beyond 12 months. If you wish to work beyond the one- or two-year limit, then the normal Foreign Worker regulations to obtain a Work Permit in Canada apply (i.e., the HRSDC Confirmation Process - application for a labour market opinion).
To apply for a Work Permit, visit the website to download and print out an application kit. The application kit includes an Extension Guide, an Application Form, and a Document Checklist. You will also need to order a Fees Receipt in order to pay the application fee (this form cannot be downloaded). The Fees Receipt usually takes 2 weeks to be delivered. An alternate method is to by credit card. When paying online, make sure you print your "official receipt", complete "Payer Information Section" and attach the receipt to your completed application. IMPORTANT: Check the Extension Guide to ensure that you pay the correct amount (e.g., Work Permit application is $150.)
