The main applications for the research degrees will be invited in late 2002 / early 2003 with closing date of 31 January 2003. Clearing round applications may be invited in May and September with closing dates of 31 May 2003 (for September intake) and 30 September 2003 (for January intake) if there are study places left.

It is therefore to your advantage to apply early.
There are two dates for commencement of MPhil candidature, namely, 1 September 2003 or 1 January 2004. Successful applicants who are unable to commence their candidature on 1 September 2003 will be allowed to commence on 1 January 2004.
Successful applicants for the research degree of PhD may commence their candidature on the first day of any calendar month during a year.

Other Documents Required in Support of Application
The original or officially certified transcripts and certified copies of diplomas/certificates of academic qualifications obtained. Documents which are not in English should be accompanied by a formal certified translation in English acceptable to the University. Applicants should also provide documentary evidence certifying their professional qualifications, if any. Photocopies of documents not properly certified will not be accepted.
The names and addresses of two persons from whom academic references have been obtained.
HK$150, being the application fee (non-refundable). Overseas applicants should pay by bank draft drawn on a Hong Kong bank, or by US dollar bank draft (USD20) payable to "The University of Hong Kong".
TOEFL record or record of other English proficiency tests accepted by the University for graduates of non-English speaking universities. (taken within 2 years)(The TOEFL code of the University is 9671.)
GMAT or GRE score report (for admission to the School of Business only) (taken within 4 years).(The GMAT and GRE code of the University is 788 and 2482 respectively.)
Applicants for admission to read for the degree of MPhil or PhD should propose a field of study. For the degree of MPhil, applicants should prepare a statement of research interest, including their reasons for undertaking graduate work at The University of Hong Kong. However, applicants to the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Arts should prepare a detailed research proposal. The MPhil research proposal for the Faculty of Arts should be 2-3 pages. MPhil and PhD applicants to the Faculty of Education is required to submit a 4-page Research Proposal Summary and the proforma is available at the Office of Research of the Faculty of Education. They should contact the heads of the appropriate departments about their proposed research before they submit their applications for admission. Other PhD applicants should prepare a detailed research proposal giving a clear description of the particular aspect of the field in which they are interested, and explaining the particular approach which they propose to take in studying the subject matter. Applicants may be refused admission if the University considers that they are insufficiently prepared or that the proposed research cannot be successfully pursued at the University.
All documents submitted in support of application will be destroyed if the applications are unsuccessful.

Postgraduate Studentship
Postgraduate Studentships shall be awarded to all qualified full-time MPhil and PhD students as determined by the Board of Graduate Studies. The studentship shall be tenable on an annual basis and renewable upon the conditions in the Regulations Governing Postgraduate Studentships. The maximum period of award shall be 2 years (for MPhil candidature) and 3 years (for 3-year PhD candidature) or 4 years (for 4-year PhD candidature).
