Waikato University has the second-highest number of top-ranked schools in the country and won't lose out from a new system of distributing research funding.
The Government's Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF) rewards tertiary institutions for the quality of their research. Leading the rankings overall are Auckland and Canterbury, with Victoria, Otago, Waikato, Lincoln and Massey next. Auckland University of Technology is the lowest ranked university.
But of the at least 30 Waikato University schools -- teaching areas like management or science -- assessed, seven were top in the country. They included maths, computing science, communications and media, molecular biology, accounting and finance, management-human resources and industrial relations.
Its chemistry school was ranked first equal.
The university's vice-chancellor Prof Bryan Gould said the results showed Waikato had more "firsts" than any other university besides Auckland.
He expected the rankings to be a drawcard for top scholars.
"It shows that our computing and mathematical sciences are by far the strongest in the country, and management studies is top in the country as well."
Waikato University had to put about $600,000 into the PBRF, which ranks and funds the 25 participating tertiary institutes according to the quality of research produced, the number of postgraduate qualifications completed and the amount of external research income generated.
Prof Gould said he expected to get a similar amount of funding back. "We have taken into account the hit of the money we had to put into the PBRF, but the funding is additional to the university's budget."
Prof Gould said the university comparison was crude and unreliable, and what people should focus on was the individual disciplines within each university.
"Students don't want to know which is the best university overall. They will be more concerned with which university has the best school in the subject they are interested in.
"We are right on the shoulder of Otago University and when you take into account that Otago has a medical school which produces a lot of research, and Waikato has a teachers' training college which doesn't require a high research output, we have done incredibly well."
Prof Gould said the results of the PBRF, which were not due to be publicly released until next Wednesday, showed Waikato University was a strong research-led university.
The Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) and Te Wananga o Aotearoa also participated in the PBRF.
Wintec director of planning and development Neil Cooper said he was pleased with how Wintec had performed but wouldn't confirm results. "Polytechs simply don't have the depth of research history that universities do, but we have three key areas that have come out of the fund; multimedia and design, sport and exercise science, and nursing. Overall we're generally happy with the results," he said.
