New terminal means new rules at Pearson
KEVIN MCGRAN
TRANSPORTATION REPORTER
Shhh. Pearson International Airport is opening its new Infield Terminal tomorrow. Pass it on.
The announcement wasn't supposed to be this quiet. But the $4 billion price tag attached to the first phase of Pearson's redevelopment — which will culminate in the opening this fall of a new Terminal One — and the bankruptcy of its main tenant, Air Canada, has forced airport officials to back off on some planned hoopla.
Nonetheless, the new Infield Terminal does mean changes that might catch some passengers off guard.
To that end, Air Canada — the main tenant of the Infield Terminal — is imposing a new check-in time for all its passengers on international (other than U.S.) flights, as well as those on allied liners Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Mexicana and Alitalia. Those passengers must have completed check-in at Terminal One at least one hour before departure. The reason? They may be taking a bus.
The new 10-gate Infield Terminal is actually a five-minute bus ride away from Terminal One, situated between runways near the cargo space at the redesigned airport. The bus must pass through a tunnel under the runways to the terminal building, where two licensed restaurants, a newsstand/bookstore and duty-free shop await.
"What it means to the passengers is, they will continue to check in on international flights at Terminal One, drop their bags there, get their boarding pass there," said Peter Gregg, spokesperson for the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, which runs Pearson. "They'll proceed to a gate like they normally would. At the gate at Terminal One, they would get on an airside bus.
"The buses will be running constantly every few minutes. They'll get on a bus and be driven over to the Infield Terminal.
"The bus will drop them off at the infield terminal and they will proceed to their gate, which will be on their boarding pass. They'll board the flight there and the flight will depart."
Arrivals follow the path in reverse, adding a stop at Customs in Terminal One.
